Jane Castillo is an award winning artist, author, and art educator. She studied art education at California State University at Fullerton. She later earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from Claremont Graduate University. She has taught thousands of students in the Los Angeles area for over 16 years. Known as an installation artist, her artwork has been exhibited throughout the country and abroad.

Ms. Castillo currently teaches in Los Angeles, California as a credentialed itinerant art teacher to 5 elementary schools and teaches approximately 600 students a week.

Arts lovers can directly support the arts on “Tax Day” this year — and we want as many Californians as possible to know about it. The California Arts Council has created flyers and web banner ads to help spread the word that California taxpayers can now contribute part of their state tax refund to the California Arts Council.

All fees for the Arts Plate are considered a charitable contribution to the California Arts Council. Businesses and residents looking to support arts statewide now have an extra incentive to support California arts – and have a cool looking license plate as well.

Castillo Migration II, video installation, 2010

Just finished installing this video installation, entitled “Migration II” at The Museum of History and Art, Ontario yesterday. It is one of my
favorite exhibitions to participate in. As, Day of the Dead is one of my favorite days of the year.

Each year, hundreds of millions of Monarch butterflies travel from the United States and Canada to the heart of Mexico.
Starting in late October to early November, the butterflies start to arrive in Mexico. Incidentally, this time period coincides with the Dia de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) holiday. The indigenous peoples of the area believe the butterflies represent their departed loved ones souls, returning in the form of the butterfly.

Aztec tradition holds that the souls of the departed will return as hummingbirds and butterflies, and the link between myth and the monarchs’ annual return spans centuries.

It is my own experiences with the dearly departed in my life and this butterfly that have inspired these pieces. I hope you enjoy the show.

Southern California artist Castillo, whose recent work can be seen at downtown San Jose’s MACLA gallery, has a new project on display that has deep community roots.

During a two-week residency with MACLA, she worked with students from Mount Pleasant and Notre Dame high schools, as well as residents from the nearby William/Reed Corridor neighborhood, to create “Bloodlines.”

Castillo worked with the students and neighbors to embroider their last names on red fabric, which will be woven in the trees across South First Street from MACLA. Seen together, the names provide a striking visual impression of the community’s rich diversity.

It’s certainly turning heads, and I’ve heard that one recent visitor wondered if Christo, the artist who did the “Gates” project in New York’s Central Park, was in town. Nope, it’s all Castillo and the community.

There will be a public reception for the piece at 3 p.m. today at Parque de los Pobladores, across the street from MACLA, which is at 510 S. First St.
